With polls showing Virginia's U.S. Senate race locked in a dead heat, Democrat Jim Webb is bringing in the party's top fundraiser to an Oct. 19 event.
Former President Bill Clinton will headline a reception at the McLean home of former U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb, D-Va., whom Webb's opponent -- Republican George Allen -- defeated six years ago. The Webb campaign estimates the event could draw between 300 and 500 people and generate at least $300,000.
The Webb camp said in August that Clinton would appear at a fundraiser, though yesterday's announcement comes as the campaign has overcome an initial 16-point deficit in statewide polling.
Yesterday, the Webb campaign said it brought in nearly $3.5 million in July, August and September and entered October with $2.7 million in cash. At the end of June, the campaign reported about $424,000.
Next week, the Allen campaign will release its most recent fundraising report. Allen, who reported a treasury of about $6.6 million on June 30, is expected to keep a strong fundraising edge.
While Webb still lags in raising money, the pace will certainly step up.
