Republicans say party bracing for November losses

Republicans are awaiting the Nov. 7 election with the sense of dread felt by Gulf Coast inhabitants as a hurricane makes landfall: They know a wave is coming and pray that the levees hold.
"We will sustain losses (in Congress)," said Ed Gillespie, past chairman of the Republican National Committee. "We are going to give back some seats."
"The trend here is negative," said Republican pollster Brian Nienaber, announcing the results of George Washington University's Battleground Poll last week. "If Election Day was tomorrow, (GOP control of) both houses of Congress would be in jeopardy."
Democrats are primed to vote with "almost unprecedented ... intensity," said Nienaber, while Republican voters are increasingly dismayed with the party leadership's handling of the congressional page scandal.
