The two men vying to be New Jersey's next US senator faced off in New York City on Saturday.

Appointed Democrat incumbent Bob Menendez and Republican opponent Tom Kean Junior spent more time going after each other rather than answering the questions put to them.

On the subject of disgraced former Congressman Mark Foley and e-mails sent to male pages, Kean suggested the senate look into that and more:

"We should have an independent outside investigator, not only on these circumstances, but on actions of what members of Congress are doing. I mean, I've got an opponent who is under federal criminal investigation."

(Moderator:) "Senator Menendez, yes or no, should there be a senate investigation as well?

(Menendez:) "Absolutely! Anything to protect the pages should be pursued."

Menendez spent most of his time taking Kean to task for supporting the Bush administration's stance on the Iraq war.
