A national Democratic group has spent nearly $1 million on a round of television ads launched Tuesday across the state to lash Republican Sen. George Allen in the tight, closely watched U.S. Senate race.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ad - on a nine-day, $950,000 run - attacks Allen on issues from his alleged use of racial slurs and news reports that he failed for five years to disclose stock options to Congress as required by ethics rules.

The ad, run independently from but in support of Democrat Jim Webb, is among the largest yet in a race the latest polls indicate is tied or very close. The race's outcome could help determine which party controls the Senate.

Allen's campaign quickly labeled the ad as "deceitful" and immediately sought to tie it to national Democrats, particularly New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, whom Allen's conservative Virginia voting base detests.

The ad opens mocking Allen's appeal last week for restoring the campaign to issues - an appeal he made even as he launched a second ad attacking Webb for a 1979 magazine article in which he questioned the fitness of women to lead men in combat and lamented their admission to U.S. service academies.

In rapid succession, the ad references Allen's applying the obscure racial slur "macaca" to a man of Indian descent in August and allegations by former college football teammates that he used a six-letter epithet for black people.
