Four years to the day after he voted with a minority of House members against authorizing the use of force in Iraq, Sen. Robert Menendez claimed yesterday history has proved him correct.
"My vote wasn't popular at the time, but I cast it with pride because I was knew I was doing the right thing," Menendez said. "The bottom line is ... I was right."
Flanked by two retired military officers, the Democrat used a Senate campaign stop in Camden County on the anniversary of his vote against the war to sharpen his position on Iraq.
Menendez's assessment that American forces have become "mired in a civil war" in Iraq was as blunt as any he has ever made. His attack on President Bush's handling of the conflict was even more caustic than his past remarks.
"George Bush's war in Iraq is failing today because he has mismanaged it from the very beginning," said Menendez, who was a congressman from New Jersey's 13th District when the House voted, 296-133, to authorize the use of force in Iraq if necessary.
