Hobbled by a foot planted firmly in his mouth, dogged by nearly $150,000 in donations he took from clients of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, embattled Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., is fighting back with pork and slime.
The ugly tenor of American politics is no better displayed than in this beautiful corner of America, where cottonwoods are turning gold and an autumn snowfall has dusted summits of the Gallatin Mountains.
They may be going down to defeat, but Republicans are unsheathing the usual bag of tricks three weeks before Halloween.
"Jon Tester, Weak on Terrorism!" proclaims a Burns radio ad, attacking the Democratic farmer-legislator who leads him in the polls.
A TV hit charges that Tester would "cut-and-run" in Iraq, and depicts him as allied with "extreme environmentalists."
The National Republican Senatorial Committee has used last-minute cash infusions in Montana: It helped elect Burns, a former auctioneer, in 1988 and rescued him from a 2000 challenge by rancher (now Montana Gov.) Brian Schweitzer. Tester, while trailing significantly in money, has drawn national attention and been able to raise money in Seattle.
