U.S. Sen. Barack Obama has a tender spot in his heart for Pittsburgh, which he last visited more than a decade ago.
"I'm a sucker for rivers and any city that's got a nice big river running through it," Obama said in an interview Tuesday with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I'm really looking forward to being there again. It's a beautiful city."
The last time the Illinois Democrat was in Pittsburgh was to speak at Carnegie Mellon University. He was a law professor at the University of Chicago.
When Obama returns today to help raise money for Senate candidate Bob Casey, it's as a prominent rising star of the Democratic Party. Obama, the only black senator, frequently is mentioned as a likely presidential candidate.
Casey, the state treasurer from Scranton who is trying to unseat U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn Hills, couldn't ask for a headliner for his fundraiser with more star power, said Larry Sabato, a political science professor at the University of Virginia.
"Charisma is an old word but it fits. Whatever it is, he's got it," Sabato said. "He can attract more cameras per square inch than anyone in American politics, except the president."
Obama will speak at a $1,000-per-person luncheon at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, preceded by a $10,000-per-person VIP reception.
