To survive their upcoming series of debates, U.S. Senate candidates Jim Pederson and Jon Kyl will have to put aside any pent-up repulsion they have for each other, said Eileen Borris, a Paradise Valley political psychologist.
"It's called putting up a good front," she said. "They have their own agendas. They know what points they want to get across. That's what they focus on."
Simply looking confident and comfortable goes a long way toward swaying voters, too, she said.
"If you get a guy up there who is not polished and looking good, that gives a certain feeling," she said. "You know that when you meet somebody, it's like the first 10 seconds or 30 seconds and you’re already forming an opinion."
Neither Kyl nor Pederson have high profiles, so the televised debates could be pivotal to shaping their public images, she said.
