Gov. Phil Bredesen stars in a new commercial for Democratic Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr., while TV star Fred Thompson acts as narrator for a new ad for GOP candidate Bob Corker.

In part, both ads may be seen as making appeals to Republicans.

The Democratic ad uses Bredesen, who has enjoyed support from Republicans in building up a substantial lead in his own re-election campaign, to talk up bipartisanship while promoting Ford.

The Republican ad uses Thompson's voice to link Corker to older GOP state stalwarts, who are all out campaigning for their party's nominee.

The 30-second Ford ad features a woman, Dixie Taylor Huff, saying she has been asked: "What in the world is a country girl like you doing for Harold Ford Jr.?" She answers, "We need a change."

Huff also is treasurer of the state Democratic Party and has long been active in the nursing home industry's trade association, Tennessee Health Care Association.

Then there's a farmer, who says he is neither Democrat nor Republican but backs Ford as "the man who has the ideas."
