The U.S. Senate race in Missouri - relatively calm for most of the fall - erupted into an emotional exchange Wednesday involving a veteran of the Iraq war.

The veteran, Josh Lansdale, had been featured in a campaign commercial for Democrat Claire McCaskill. In the ad, which is no longer on the air, Lansdale said he sought treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs for an injured ankle and post-traumatic stress disorder but was unable to see a doctor for six months because of budget cuts.

Republican Sen. Jim Talent's camp questioned the ad’s veracity after a television report said some of its assertions could not be proven.

Wednesday, Lansdale insisted his statements were true but refused to release the appointment records from the VA Medical Center in Kansas City that would independently confirm the assertion.

"If I'm good enough to risk my life in the name of freedom, then I'm good enough to have my word taken," Lansdale said at a news conference.
