U.S. Senate candidate Jon Tester laid his platform on the line in Missoula on Wednesday, speaking to the Missoula Downtown Association and later to a smaller crowd gathered outside the county courthouse.
The downtown association brought Tester to speak at its monthly luncheon Wednesday. Matt Ellis, current MDA board president and general manager of the Missoula Osprey, introduced Tester to a crowd of about 85 members and reminded them that the association does not endorse any political candidates. Tester's presence was strictly for informational purposes, Ellis said.
"(U.S.) Sen. (Conrad) Burns was invited but already had a prior engagement," he said.
Downtown association executive director Linda McCarthy said the group began trying to schedule the two Senate candidates as far back as July. It presented Burns with several possible dates but none worked with his schedule.
The association had to move the luncheon date, which is usually on a Tuesday, to Wednesday to accommodate Tester's calendar.
"It's our goal to make sure that our members have access to political candidates," McCarthy said. "We just want to create opportunities for our membership to talk with these candidates."
Every election year the association tries to bring political issues before its membership. In January, for instance, the association brought Gov. Brian Schweitzer to speak at its annual dinner.
