Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb received $3.3 million in direct contributions from July through September, about one-third more than Republican Sen. George Allen's nearly $2 million, federal campaign reports showed Friday.
That left Allen with $5.5 million on hand compared to $2.7 million for Webb in one of the nation's closest watched and most bitterly contested races.
Webb's fundraising, combined with a $1 million broadcast advertising attack on Allen by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, has made the race financially competitive in the month leading to the Nov. 7 election.
As late as June 30, Allen reported $6.6 million on hand, giving him a 16-to-1 cash advantage over Webb, a former Republican in his first bid for elected office, according to Federal Election Commission data.
"There was a lot of doubt that Webb could be financially competitive, but what's happened here is a tremendous early Allen advantage was somewhat undermined by all the negative publicity attached to the 'macaca' incident," said Robert D. Holsworth, a Virginia Commonwealth University political science professor.
