Two months of faux pas and negative publicity have whittled U.S. Sen. George Allen's fundraising advantage over Democratic challenger Jim Webb.
However, the Republican incumbent still has twice as much money as the two head into the final weeks of the campaign.
Allen's campaign reported Friday that he raised $2.6 million from July through September. The Republican has nearly $5.6 million on hand.
Webb previously announced that he raised $3.4 million for the same three-month period. He had $2.7 million available in his campaign treasury on Oct. 1.
Webb's strong showing is another sign that the race has tightened. The Democrat began his campaign against Allen with a financial handicap. This summer, Allen reported a $6.6 million reserve, nearly 16 times what was in Webb's coffer.
Since August, however, Allen's campaign has been in almost perpetual damage-control mode after the Senator called a Webb campaign worker of Indian descent "macaca," a term used as a racial slur in some cultures. He also has been accused of using racial slurs while in college.
Still, in reference to the campaign coffer amounts, "two to one speaks for itself," said Dick Wadhams, Allen's campaign manager.
