The rhetoric turned sharply negative - and personal - in the fourth U.S. Senate debate Monday, with Jim Talent and Claire McCaskill repeatedly accusing each other of mischaracterizing their records.

Meeting in Springfield, McCaskill, a Democrat, went after her Republican rival for airing a campaign ad that features a veteran calling her a "liar" and a "cheat" because, the veteran said, she claims to support the troops, but doesn't.

Talent admitted that he wouldn't have used the same words to describe her, but questioned McCaskill's record on veterans' benefits. The incumbent also pointed out that McCaskill has referred to him as a "false patriot."

McCaskill shot back that she thought it "unpatriotic" not to fully fund veterans' benefits and said she would never call Talent names such as "liar" or "cheat."

"This is really the problem," she said. "When asked whether or not he would call me a liar or a cheat, he said no he wouldn't. But he approved an ad that said that."

Talent used a segment that allowed the candidates to ask each other a question to ask McCaskill for the first time in a debate about her husband's finances.
