For the first time in her race for the U.S. Senate, Democrat Claire McCaskill has outraised her opponent, incumbent Republican Jim Talent, in a quarterly report.
McCaskill, the state auditor, raised about $2.6 million between July 1 and Sept. 30, compared with Talent’s nearly $2 million.
But Talent has outraised McCaskill significantly since the race began. Talent’s take is about $12.6 million to McCaskill’s $7 million.
After expenses, Talent reported that he had $4.2 million on hand Sept. 30, while McCaskill said she had $246,000.
A spokeswoman for the Democrat said McCaskill had already spent her money on television advertising time for the final weeks of the race.
The race is nearing the state’s record for a Senate race, which came in 2002 when Talent and Democrat Jean Carnahan spent about $20.5 million combined.
