Former President Bill Clinton, speaking to a packed Democratic Party fundraiser, delivered the party's 2006 theme of change last night with a partisan blast at President Bush and a boost for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Sheldon Whitehouse.
Speaking at $100-per-person dinner that drew more than 1,100 to the Rhode Island Convention Center, Clinton said that the only path to change in Washington is to switch the U.S. House and Senate from GOP control to Democratic.
"I've never seen the American people so thoughtful, so concerned and so eager for someone to talk to them," said Mr. Clinton. "Things are out of whack."
Under Republican control of Congress and the Bush administration, Clinton said, the Iraq war has spun out of control, wages for average Americans have stagnated and the U.S. economy is "exporting jobs instead of products."
Whitehouse, who is running against Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, is "the agent of America's historic opportunity" to change direction in Washington, D.C., said Clinton.
The former president has long been a favorite of Rhode Island Democrats; he and his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, have made many trips to the state to raise money and bolster Democratic campaigns.
