Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Webb said Wednesday he feels he has the formula and will have the funding to pull ahead of incumbent Sen. George Allen in the final weeks before the Nov. 7 election.
"What we need to do is get out and talk to people. Also, we have enough financing right now that we can defend against the negative ads and that's what we're going to be doing," he said during a brief fundraiser in Martinsville Wednesday evening.
Lorene Martin, chairman of the Martinsville Democratic Party, said the private joint Martinsville and Henry County party fundraiser at Piedmont Arts Association was a success with about 60 people in attendance and an estimated more than $12,000 raised.
Webb said the difficulty for his campaign came in its late start. After winning a primary, Webb had to spend a lot of time raising money for the November race. He also spent some time out with his son, who is in the military, before he was deployed to Iraq.
"So the challenge is to get out in areas like Southside and Southwest and have people listen to me and let me answer their questions. Wherever we've been able to go, the numbers have gone up. All the way since February," he said.
Webb's poll numbers have risen steadily in recent weeks. Polls now show him either tied with Allen or holding a tenuous edge that is within the margin of error.
