Gov. Phil Bredesen brought his support and political coattails to Republican-rich East Tennessee on Wednesday to campaign with Democratic Senate nominee Harold Ford Jr. on the first day of early voting.
As Republican Senate nominee and former Chattanooga mayor Bob Corker cast his early vote in his hometown 100 miles to the south, Ford addressed an overflow crowd of at least 600 at an interdenominational prayer breakfast in Knoxville.
Corker campaigned in Knoxville this week in the company of Republican Rep. John 'Jimmy' Duncan of Knoxville and GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander, who has a home in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains.
Knoxville also is home to Corker's finance chairman, Jimmy Haslam, CEO of the Pilot Corp. chain of truckstops and convenience stores.
But Democrat Bredesen carried Knoxville four years ago in winning his first term as governor and said he would be "disappointed" if he fails to repeat that success in his re-election bid against Republican Jim Bryson this year.
And he said he expects Ford, a congressman from Memphis, also to do well.
"I have nothing bad to say about the other side," Bredesen said in an interview.
