Arizona Democrats will converge in Tempe to welcome Barack Obama to the state Monday morning, and party organizers are counting on the recognizable Illinois senator's buzz to help them.

At least 13 state and national office hopefuls will be there for the rally, held 15 days before the election. They include candidate for the Senate Jim Pederson as well as House of Representatives candidates Ellen Simon, Herb Paine and John Thrasher. House candidate Harry Mitchell will also be there for the rally, which is taking place in the government center named for him.

David Schapira, who is angling for a District 17 House seat, sees having Obama in town as an opportunity to capitalize on the Illinois senator's popularity and the hope generated for his future.

"He's the real deal. Very charismatic. Very smart," Schapira said as he was heading out for an evening of campaigning. "He's a role model in that he's done a good job of reaching out to the people in the state of Illinois and representing them in Washington."

Leaders from the Arizona Democratic Party agreed.

"I think it's going to help the ticket every way up and down," said Bart Graves, a party spokesman.
