The candidates for U.S. Senate discussed foreign policy, abortion and other issues as they made their pitch to Jewish voters at a forum in Livingston last night.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D- N.J.) stressed his "unwavering support for Israel" during his 14 years in Congress and criticized the Bush administration for taking a "back seat" and a "reactive role" on efforts to being peace to the Middle East. He called for a return to "constant engagement" as prac ticed under President Clinton.

He received some of his loudest applause when he said the U.S. needs to pull its troops out of Iraq. The senator also said the war there had sidetracked the United States from preventing North Korea from developing nuclear weapons technology.

"That was a lost opportunity. Now we are dealing with the aftermath," Menendez said. He also said he would "consider all op tions" should Iran obtain nuclear weapons.

Menendez and his Republican challenger, state Sen. Tom Kean Jr., appeared separately to speak and take questions at the forum sponsored by United Jewish Communities of MetroWest New Jersey.
