Senator George Allen, who has voted down the line with the Bush administration on the conduct of the war in Iraq, signaled a change of direction today.
Democratic opponent Jim Webb asked why it had taken so long.
"Although our principles and strategic goals remain unchanged, mistakes have been made and progress has been too slow," said Allen before the Virginia Association of School Superintendents.
Allen also said that the Iraqis should be given 60 to 90 days to stem the violence, particularly in Baghdad, before the U.S. initiates a change.
Allen also had harsh terms for the Iraqis. "The Iraqi people and the Iraqi leaders need to show some backbone, some spine," Allen said. "We can't continue doing the same things and expect different results. We have to adapt our operations, adapt our tactics."
Allen's change follows his being endorsed by Senator John Warner, who recently returned from a trip to Iraq to say that the war was not working.
