Actor Kevin Kline, who grew up in St. Louis County, returned to the region Thursday to help raise money for state Auditor Claire McCaskill's bid for the U.S. Senate. She is challenging Republican incumbent Jim Talent.
Kline said that he was supporting McCaskill, a Democrat, because of their common views - notably, their support for all forms of stem cell research.
Kline, whose son has diabetes, is on the board of the national Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
He also praised McCaskill's criticism of the war in Iraq. Kline said he generally avoids campaigning for politicians. He last stumped in Missouri for former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan, D-Mo., whom Talent defeated in 2002.
