Tempting a potential backlash by evangelical voters, President Bush campaigned in Pennsylvania yesterday for a GOP moderate besieged by an ex-mistress.

Bush later attended a fund-raiser for verbally challenged Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), who's accused of using racist language and trying to hide his Jewish heritage.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said, "When a President goes and campaigns for candidates, he's there to help them and, no, I don't think there's a downside."

But as Bush campaigned for embattled Rep. Don Sherwood (R-Pa.) and Allen amid the page scandal involving former Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), Democrats highlighted that the President has proclaimed this to be "Character Counts Week."

"It is no surprise that President Bush is celebrating 'Character Counts Week' by campaigning today for two ethically challenged Republican incumbents," Democratic Party spokeswoman Stacie Paxton said.

Sherwood's ex-mistress sued him for $5.5 million last year, accusing him of abusing her over the five years of their relationship; Sherwood settled the lawsuit. In 2004, the mistress called 911 from Sherwood's Washington apartment said he had choked her; no charges were filed. Sherwood has denied choking her but apologized for the tryst on a TV spot. Polls show him trailing Democratic candidate Chris Carney.
