Republican Sen. Mike DeWine is standing behind ads that say U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown didn't pay an unemployment tax bill even though several Ohio television stations have stopped airing one of them.

DeWine repeated accusations during the third debate in the Ohio Senate race Thursday that Brown, a Democrat, failed to pay a $1,700 unemployment bill.

The Republican National Committee produced an ad that said Brown didn't pay the bill for 13 years.

But Brown's campaign handed out an Ohio Bureau of Employment Services document showing that the state placed a claim on the tax bill on Dec. 20, 1993, and released it four months later when the bill was paid in full. Brown spokeswoman Joanna Kuebler said Brown discovered last year that the claim of more than $1,700 was still listed as active.

The RNC sent a letter standing by the ad Thursday to Ohio television stations, several of which have stopped airing it. DeWine's campaign changed a similar ad to remove a reference to how long Brown's tax bill was delinquent, DeWine spokesman Brian Seitchik said.

During the debate, DeWine said it didn't matter how long it took Brown to pay the bill. "The fact is he didn't pay," he said.

Brown said the ad was the act of a desperate candidate behind in the polls. "It was a $1,700 mistake," he said. "Mike DeWine simply has no spine."
