Two national Republican campaign committees aren't running television ads supporting Mike McGavick in the final weeks of the election, which some analysts see as a concession that he can't beat Democratic U.S. Maria Cantwell.
Republican Party spokesmen said Friday that they remain optimistic that McGavick will win, adding they still could decide to buy advertising time.
But some political analysts said it shows the GOP has decided to spend money elsewhere as they struggle to keep control of the Senate. One analyst said the decision might actually help McGavick as he tries to portray himself as independent of national Republicans and the White House.
A spokesman for the McGavick campaign, Elliot Bundy, said the lack of advertising from the national Republican committees was not unexpected given the closeness of Senate races elsewhere. Bundy also said the campaign has enough resources to make its case as the Nov. 7 election approaches.
"We've always known we would have to carry this race on our own," Bundy said.
Bundy also noted the lack of ads from national Democrats supporting Cantwell.
But a Cantwell campaign spokeswoman, Charla Neuman, said the senator's campaign doesn't need a boost from the national party. The senator has a comfortable lead in the polls and, though McGavick beat her in fundraising during the last three months, Cantwell has $1.4 million more in her campaign account.
