Jon Kyl and Jim Pederson once again locked horns on far-reaching topics in their final showdown on Friday, but for the first time, they discussed Arizona at length.
The debate, broadcast live from the studios of KNAZ-TV in Flagstaff, was the third of three meetings for the Senate candidates before the Nov. 7 midterm election.
Pederson, a Democrat, said the Republican incumbent didn't do enough to stop Homeland Security funding from being cut in Arizona. The state took a 50 percent hit in anti-terrorism funding this year, dropping to $20 million from $40 million.
"I was very perplexed and very disappointed when Phoenix didn't get the money it needed to fund homeland security mandates here," Kyl said. He said he set up a meeting between Phoenix officials and representatives of the federal government to address future funding, and he's confident Arizona will get enough.
Pederson shot back, "I can't believe what I'm hearing. Why do Nebraska and Kansas get higher funding?
"You arranged a meeting. . . . Why didn't you go to that meeting? If you weren't outraged, you should have been."
