The series of acerbic debates between Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., and his Democratic challenger Jon Tester ended Friday night, not with a bang, but a whisper.
An inadequate sound system in the gymnasium at C.M. Russell High School plagued the final of seven exchanges between the candidates, forcing the nearly 2,000 people attending to strain to catch Burns' and Tester's words.
What audience members would have heard, if they could have, was summed up in Burns' opening statement:
"The more things change, the more they remain the same."
Burns was talking about the need to spur economic growth in Montana. But the saying also described the way the previous six debates have gone.
This one was not much different.
