Health care is at the heart of the new direction Bob Casey Jr. wants to take the nation if he's elected to the U.S. Senate.
Since early in his campaign, Casey, the state's treasurer, has held the much-discussed and debated issue as a priority, and he said it's a major economic challenge in Pennsylvania.
Casey, a Democrat and past state auditor general, challenges incumbent Republican Rick Santorum in the Nov. 7 election.
Casey said by telephone Friday that he supports two health care initiatives in the form of bills in the Senate.
One would allow states to expand health insurance eligibility for children and provide a greater share of Medicaid coverage for kids.
The other would focus on small businesses and create a health insurance purchasing pool.
"I'm not supporting initiatives that will never pass," Casey said. "We need to move the ball down the field for health care."
