PBN: You have built your campaign on the notion that we need a Democratic Senate. Why?
WHITEHOUSE: First, it creates an institution in Washington that can act as a check on the Bush administration. … A Democratic Senate can stop bad legislation from coming out of the House … And, frankly, through the Senate investigative power, [the administration] will be less likely to get up to nonsense if they know there’s a Senate that will look into what’s going on.
The other piece is that there needs to be a platform to develop the ideas … that families across Rhode Island are urgently asking for, such as a new energy policy; a reform of health care that allows all families to get coverage; fixing this wretched prescription drug [Medicare] Part D plan; helping public education, instead of stomping on it with No Child Left Behind; and figuring out ways that American families can find a way to afford college education.
