Just another campaign day for Harold Ford Jr. Eighteen hours is OK. Could he get 26?

"Right now it's just about shaking as many hands and touching as many people as I can," said the 36-year-old Democratic congressman from Memphis, locked in a death struggle with former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist .

With early voting started, he said, "It's like every day's Christmas Eve. Can't sleep. Woke up this morning at 2, 3 and 4, and at 4:45 my alarm went off for a 5:10 radio interview in Memphis, I dozed back and woke up at 5:14 and didn't get on 'til 6."

Ford spent an hour with The Jackson Sun Editorial Board, touting his 10 years of work in Congress, and chiding his opponent's current campaign theme of being from Tennessee while trying to brand Ford as a purely Washington creation.

"I've represented a district in this state for 10 years, and he also says that not being from Washington makes him better equipped to deal with the issues he'll face. He can't have it both ways," said Ford, who later calls his opponent, "a unique individual."
