U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. said today that his strong support for Gov. Phil Bredesen led him to back former state Senate Majority Leader Bob Rochelle in Rochelle's bid to regain his old seat.

Ford attended a fundraiser Thursday night for Rochelle, who had pushed for a state income tax shortly before he left the Senate. But the Congressman said on political commentator Steve Gill's radio show this morning (http://www.gillreport.com/) that both he and Rochelle know that Ford doesn't support an income tax.

"Bob Rochelle knew before he invited me to that fundraiser that I was opposed to the state income tax when it was introduced," the Congressman from Memphis (www.fordfortennessee.com) said told Gill. "He knows that I voted for more than two trillion dollars worth of tax cuts.

"But I also know that Phil Bredesen (www.bredesen.com), who I think has done one heck of a job as governor, needs people in the state Senate who can work with him on health care issues, who can work with him on education issues.

"And I may not agree with Bob Rochelle on every issue. He knows that, and I know that. But when it comes to working with Phil Bredesen and the governing model that he's put forward, I make clear I'm a Phil Bredesen Democrat, and I believe that Rochelle will bring that kind of spirit and that approach … and where he doesn't, Steve Gill, I will come on your show and be opposed to him."
