A surge of October donations and a $500,000 loan have helped Democratic U.S Senate nominee Claire McCaskill close some of her money gap with Republican incumbent Jim Talent.
Reports filed Thursday show that McCaskill has raised about $1.3 million since Oct. 1, compared with $593,247 for Talent.
Her tally includes donations collected during fundraisers featuring such high-profile figures as Michael J. Fox and Kevin Kline.
Talent's collections include contributions raised during an Oct. 12 fundraiser headlined by Laura Bush, wife of President George W. Bush.
In addition, McCaskill reported that she took out a $500,000 bank loan on Oct. 10 to help pay for more TV ad spots. McCaskill used her Kirkwood home as collateral for the loan.
The report indicated that McCaskill already has repaid about $200,000 of the loan.
Talent senior adviser Lloyd Smith contended that the senator's campaign had "very serious questions" about the loan. "Claire McCaskill's swooped-roof mansion was not built on an auditor's salary, it was built on her husband's nursing home fortune . . . ," Smith said.
McCaskill spokeswoman Adrianne Marsh replied, "Claire is solely responsible for the loan." By law, she can't borrow from her husband, Joseph Shepard.
