Southwest Virginia voters will be essential if Democrat Jim Webb hopes to unseat Republican George Allen in next month's U.S. Senate election, Webb said Thursday.

He was campaigning with two fellow Democrats who have found this corner of the state - traditionally a Republican stronghold - surprisingly supportive over the years. Rick Boucher, who's served as the 9th District's representative for 24 years, and former Gov. Mark Warner stood with Webb in the cold rain Thursday morning and encouraged supporters to get their friends out to the polls Nov. 7.

"This election can be won right here in the 9th District," Webb said. "The other side knows that they must hold this part of Virginia in order to win. We can be ahead here if we can get the word out."

Polls show the two men running even statewide, but Allen holds a lead in Southwest Virginia. A Mason-Dixon poll conducted last week found Allen leads Webb in Southwest Virginia 48 percent to 41 percent, with 11 percent undecided. In contrast, Webb leads Allen 50 percent to 40 percent in Northern Virginia, according to the same Mason-Dixon poll.

Boucher said he's always found people willing to cross party lines to support his campaigns because they know he does what's right for Virginians in Washington, D.C.

"Jim Webb is doing all the right things," Boucher said. "He's in the very center of the political spectrum, and that is the place to be to win elections."
