U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum crisscrossed eastern Pennsylvania on Thursday as part of an intense effort to convince voters the country faces a ''gathering storm'' of national security issues and he is the better candidate to handle the threat.
In a speech in Upper Macungie he is scheduled to repeat three times today across the state - for a total of seven times in two days - Santorum urged Pennsylvanians to ''wake up'' to what he called the greatest danger the country has ever faced: Islamic fascism.
He had the same message for his opponent, Democrat Bob Casey Jr.
''We will not lose this war on the streets of Baghdad. We will lose that war right here, because Americans don't understand the gravity of the situation we're in,'' Santorum told a handful of workers and executives at military equipment maker Night Vision Systems.
Flanked by military flags in the company's warehouse, Santorum occasionally pointed for emphasis. ''We are not fighting a war on terror,'' he said. ''Terror is a tactic, it's not the enemy.''
He said Islamic fascism is being stoked by Iran, and threats to the United States are growing more complex as a result of developments in countries such as Venezuela and North Korea.
