Washington Republican Senate candidate Mike McGavick has loaned his campaign an additional $500,000, but incumbent Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell still has nearly $1 million more in her bank account as the election approaches.

McGavick, trailing in the polls and in overall fundraising, said in a statement that he made the latest loan to "ensure that our campaign has the additional resources to win this race. We are within striking distance of winning this race, as Sen. Cantwell's vulnerability continues."

McGavick earlier had loaned his campaign $2 million.

The challenger raised more than twice as much money as Cantwell during the first half of October, according to reports filed late last week with the Federal Election Commission.

McGavick raised almost $950,000 between Oct. 1 and Oct. 18. That does not include the latest loan, which came a day after the reports were due. During the same period, Cantwell raised slightly more than $390,000.

Cantwell ended the reporting period with $2.4 million in her campaign account. McGavick had more than $1.4 million, including the loan.

Overall, McGavick raised $10.1 million, including loans, and Cantwell $17.2 million, reports said.
