In their final televised debate, U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee and his Democratic challenger Sheldon Whitehouse left no political stone unturned in their high-stakes effort to score points with voters.
Iraq. Social Security. Gun control. Public corruption.
On Iraq, Whitehouse repeated his public call for Defense Secretary Donald Rumseld's resignation and his formula for extricating America from the war: announce publicly that we are leaving and let the military commanders work out the details and the timeline.
Chafee did not join the call for Rumsfeld's resignation, saying he did not believe his saying so would make a difference at this point.
"If you think your voice doesn't matter on [this] subject in Washington, Senator: speak a little louder," Whitehouse suggested.
In between Whitehouse's political zingers, Chafee explained his reasons for suggesting America try diplomacy with the countries surrounding Iraq before setting arbitrary troop-withdrawal deadlines. He also asked Whitehouse why, as attorney general running for governor in 2002, he was silent on the war vote.
