The warm-up doctor had just called stem cells a "huge boon" for medical research when Michael J. Fox ambled onstage, arms and head swaying slowly. Two hundred necks craned. No one clapped.

U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown (D., Avon) unleashed the ovation moments later, when he stepped to the lectern, thanked the doctor, and told the Ohio State University law school audience "you may have noticed we had a guest come in."

Ohio had a lot of guests yesterday, as campaign 2006 rolled into its Sergeant Pepper phase: From U.S. Senate to governor and down the ballot, candidates got by with a little help from their friends.

U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R., Cedarville) appeared with U.S. Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) in Toledo and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R., Tenn.) in Findlay. Mr. Frist was scheduled to appear later with GOP gubernatorial nominee Ken Blackwell, the secretary of state, who earlier in the day unveiled a television ad featuring former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, the Democrat who polls show well ahead in the governor's race, led down-ticket Democrats Jennifer Brunner (secretary of state) and Richard Cordray (treasurer) through a string of central Ohio events.
