THE BIG HIT against Bob Casey Jr. is that he's running as the not-Santorum, even by his own admission.
Which is not to say that it's not an excellent justification for his candidacy. The fact that he's a thoughtful, smart candidate is icing on the cake.
So we happily support Casey for Senate.
The former auditor general and current state treasurer has a track record of fiscal responsibility and reform. He was hand-picked for his ability to seriously take on incumbent Santorum.
When asked, Casey told this editorial board, "If I didn't run, [Santorum] would win." Parse that sentence, and you can find a level of confidence, resolve, maybe even a hint of political hubris that many observers had complained was missing from the Casey campaign. Polls now suggest he's right.
Casey says, "This is a race about America." And that's where the substance - and the significance - of this race lies.
Much of America worries about our engagement in an expensive and lethal war that shows no strategically possible way to win, or to end. It continues to suck resources away from our ability to deal with other potential threats, as well as from important domestic issues.
For example, a record number of Americans face the real terror of life without health care, and no viable plan to fix the problem.
As an ally of President Bush, Santorum is part of these problems.
