Democrat Bob Casey Jr. said during an interview Monday that U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's recent political attacks indicate a lawmaker "desperate" to keep his job.
"In the last couple of days, he put my face (on a television commercial) next to a mushroom cloud," Casey, the state treasurer, said. "This week, he's blaming me for terrorism and genocide. Next week, he'll probably call me an ax murderer."
Casey is hoping to unseat Santorum, a two-term Republican and the third-ranking GOP member of the U.S. Senate.
Casey stopped in Lancaster Monday afternoon for a rally and fund-raiser with supporters, and afterward he answered questions from the Intelligencer Journal.
"This race is about America," Casey said. "I believe in that, and we have to get it right for America."
Santorum has gone on the attack as Nov. 7 nears. Recently, Santorum aired a television advertisement placing Casey’s picture next to Kim Jong Il of North Korea, Mahmoud Admadinejad of Iran, the Chinese flag, a flying missile and a mushroom cloud. The ad suggests a Casey victory would put the United States at risk of attack.
