Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez enjoys a narrow lead over Republican state lawmaker Tom Kean Jr. as New Jersey's caustic and critical Senate race enters its final week, according to poll results published Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, the Menendez campaign began a series of visits by Democratic favorites with former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland in Camden County, and Kean greeted worshippers at a Newark church.

Menendez maintained a slight edge over Kean, 49 percent to 44 percent among likely voters, in the latest Quinnipiac University poll. His lead had grown by one percentage point since Quinnipiac's Oct. 12 poll and was outside the margin of error, plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

A poll for CNN by Opinion Research Corp. gave Menendez a more comfortable lead over Kean, 51 percent to 44 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. It also put Menendez over the 50 percent mark often considered pivotal.

Menendez has established an edge among suburban and, to a lesser extent, unaffiliated voters. But the race is still close and potentially volatile, said Maurice Carroll, director of the university's polling institute. Quinnipiac found that 6 percent of voters remain undecided and another 12 percent say they could change their minds.

"This last week will be critical, since New Jersey is usually late making up its mind," Carroll said.
