Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez told a group of senior citizens here Tuesday night that he wants to help change the direction of the country's policy on Iraq, the economy and reliance on outside energy.
"We have to change federal policy in these ways to create prosperity," said Menendez, who is being challenged by state Sen. Thomas H. Kean Jr., R-Union, for the U.S. Senate seat he was appointed to when Gov. Corzine vacated it to become governor.
Speaking to a packed room at the Westlake Golf and Country Club, he said that while growing up in Union City he learned that "when one of us is left behind, all of us are diminished."
Among the questions asked by Jackson residents in attendance were those on:
Giving Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. Menendez said he does not want to give Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants.
