rss feedThe United States needs to reach bipartisan agreement after this month's election on a new plan that will "start moving America out of Iraq," Sen. Chuck Hagel said Wednesday.
"We need to build some bipartisan consensus very quickly (to) develop a new strategy, a new direction," Hagel told University of Nebraska-Lincoln students.
That strategy must continue to include working with the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people, he said, but also should involve regional powers.
"We need to bring the Iranians and Syrians into this," Hagel said.
In the end, the future success of Iraq will be determined by the Iraqi people, he said.
Successful U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East depends on progress toward an Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement, Hagel said.
"That's the core issue," he said.
