Gov. Phil Bredesen and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. were in town Wednesday night, stumping for votes and dishing out chili.

The Democratic candidates, along with retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, appeared together at a "get out the vote" chili supper at Womack Stables on Barfield Crescent Road in an attempt to mobilize the Democratic base for Tuesday's elections.

"We have some very close races," said Bredesen, who is opposed for re-election by Republican Jim Bryson.

"Most people at this point have made up their minds. What is going to matter is who comes to the polls to vote," Bredesen said.

The governor and his wife served up chili to the about 300 people in the chilly horse barn where the event took place.

U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon, D-Murfreesboro, served as emcee, and Democratic state Reps. John Hood, Curt Cobb and Kent Coleman, state House candidate Mary Esther Bell and state Senate candidate Vince Springer were all in attendance, shaking hands, making speeches and asking for votes.

Ford, who has been in the national spotlight in the tight race against Republican Bob Corker, was the star of the evening. He arrived late to loud cheers, and, dropping the microphone, spoke to the crowd on a variety of issues, including the war in Iraq, the need for a change of leadership in Washington and about the need for bipartisanship in Washington.

"The key should be to gravitate to the best ideas, whoever they come from," Ford said.
