By his own measure, Jim Pederson needs to win over Southern Arizona voters if he is going to pull off his run for the Senate.

He has poured in millions of his own dollars into his campaign, as he and Republican Sen. Jon Kyl have smothered the airwaves with attack ads. The two have shredded each other on all the hot issues: immigration, Iraq, health care and Social Security.

But in the last few days before the general election, Pederson, the Democratic Senate candidate, has turned his focus on Southern Arizona. While Kyl has been touring across the state, visiting Tucson last week, Pederson was in town Wednesday with Gov. Janet Napolitano. The two talked about increasing salary benefits for Army reservists and National Guard soldiers called to active duty. Last week he joined 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards at a rally Downtown.

Tonight, he will be joined by former President Bill Clinton for a rally at Reid Park.

"The people in Pima County have to turn out," he said. "I think the people in Pima County tend to sway more my way on the issues."

Wednesday's issue was reimbursing soldiers for pay cuts while they are on active duty. Pederson and Napolitano said they would like the federal government to provide employers, private and public, with some type of financial support that ensures soldiers on military leave receive the same level of pay during regular employment.
