Republican Bob Corker said today that he has put another $2 million from his personal fortune into his campaign for the U.S. Senate.
That pushes his total self-funding in the campaign to about $4.8 million and triggers the so-called "millionaire's amendment," meaning Democrat Harold Ford Jr. can now return to his contributors -- even if they had already reached the maximum contribution limit -- and ask for more money.
The move will ensure that total spending in the Corker-Ford race surpasses $40 million -- a Tennessee record.
In a news release, Corker's campaign said the personal donation was needed to "match the out-of-state infusion to the cash-strapped Ford campaign from liberals like John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean and Chuck Schumer."
Clinton and Kennedy are among major contributors to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which Corker said has spent $5 million in Tennessee to help Ford. Similar Republican committees have spent about the same to help Corker.
Said Corker in a statement: "I would never ask Tennesseans to invest in this campaign if I were not willing to invest as well. Despite the efforts of National Democrats to use out-of-state money to try and buy this race, thanks to the generosity of our donors we believe we will have the resources necessary to defend our campaign and Tennessee values."
