Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill sought to claim victory from a presidential campaign visit intended to help defeat her, suggesting Wednesday the event highlighted Republican Sen. Jim Talent's link to Washington and was a reason voters should send her there instead.

McCaskill sought to pre-empt some of the benefits Talent hopes to receive from Friday's scheduled campaign visits with President Bush in Springfield and Joplin. Bush's appearance will mark his first public campaign event with Talent this year, although the president has helped raise money for Talent at previous private events in Missouri.

In recent weeks, Talent has been gaining increased help from top-ranking Washington officials. Bush spokesman Tony Snow headlined a Talent fundraiser on Monday, and Talent campaigned Tuesday in southern Missouri with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.

He was to be joined today in Columbia by Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee. First lady Laura Bush also appeared at a Talent fundraiser within the past few weeks.

"Basically, the last week of Senator Talent's campaign is about Washington, D.C.," McCaskill said, suggesting Talent was straining to try to retain his power there. "The last week of my campaign is about Missouri."

McCaskill's comments before about 75 Democratic enthusiasts gathered at the Cookin' From Scratch restaurant near rural Newburg also highlighted her criticism of the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq.
