The room held 128 people, the fire marshal said, but at least that many were standing in the hall, held back by a concerned restaurant owner. More were outside the building, standing at the window with "Webb for Senate" signs.
That's what a campaign with momentum looks like.
"Seeing this many people that enthusiastic is, on the one hand, encouraging to me," Democrat Jim Webb said Wednesday at 3 Olives. "On the other hand, it creates a serious sense of obligation to people who step up like that."
Webb came in on the wings of recent polls that found him leading Sen. George Allen by 2 to 5 percentage points with five days left until the Nov. 7 election.
"I've never paid any attention to the numbers," Webb said. "But it was pretty lonely when I was 33 points behind and going into a primary where people were wondering if I was a Democrat."
