The Jersey Journal endorses Democratic Party candidate Robert Menendez of Hoboken for U.S. Senate.
It is the opinion of this newspaper that Menendez, who was appointed to the Senate in December by Gov. Jon Corzine, is superior to the Republican hopeful, state Sen. Thomas H. Kean Jr. Menendez has a better understanding of the issues of our day and would best represent the people of New Jersey and the nation.
Kean Jr. has spent most of his campaign attacking the ethics of his opponent and little of it explaining what he would do in Washington. The only thing that has developed from his endless accusations is U.S. Attorney Chris Christie's decision to look at records involving the leasing of Menendez's old house and law office for office space by a North Hudson antipoverty agency. This issue was first reported by this newspaper more than a decade ago, but that did not elicit the same response and scrutiny.
It is interesting to read some editorials around the state that say both men have similar views on issues. This is an untruth. Kean Jr. is considered a moderate Republican, but the reality is that the two men have different views of our world.
On the war in Iraq, the Republican got a lot of mileage from asking Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to resign. It was a convenient request in September - once he became a candidate. On the whole, Kean supports President Bush in this Middle East venture.
By contrast, Menendez voted in Congress against the war from the start and he has called for a practical and gradual withdrawal of troops. He correctly points out that the cost of the war has been lost lives and lost funding for the nation's social programs.
