It was a revival of sorts.
Former president Bill Clinton's speech to nearly 4,000 Harold Ford Jr. supporters at a Memphis church Wednesday echoed a time when Democrats had the Oval Office and the nation experienced an extended period of economic growth.
But the mood just before he spoke at the Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ evoked scenes of gospel- and hosanna-filled Sunday services.
The party faithful swayed, sang, waved signs and chanted "Harold Ford" and later "We love Bill." One woman swooned and spoke in tongues.
Ford stepped center-stage to introduce Clinton, looked out over the audience, smiled and said "My name is Harold Ford Jr. and I approved this message."
With less than a week before midterm elections, Democrats are trying to capitalize on that level of excitement in their coordinated effort to gain control of the U.S. Senate.
In the final push, heavy-hitters like Clinton are crisscrossing the country to stump for candidates. "People know there's something fundamentally amiss with the way our political system in Washington is working," Clinton said.
