Committee supports Baucus' child health insurance proposal

Thousands more Montana children would be eligible for free or low-cost health insurance under bipartisan legislation the Senate Finance Committee approved Thursday.The committee voted 17-4 to add $35 billion in funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program, sending it to the Senate for a full vote. The increase would boost the program's funding over five years to $60 billion.
Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., said expanding the program makes good economic sense. Healthy children are more likely to stay in school, get good jobs when they graduate and less likely to end up in jail or on public assistance, he said.
"CHIP helps America to compete,'' Baucus said. "Ensuring that kids have health coverage is an investment in America's future.''
